Up for grabs a rare set of Nintendo 1950s playing cards. This is a GREAT Nintendo collectible, as most of you know that Nintendo began as a playing card manufacturer in the late 1800s. This is a 1950s set of Nintendo playing cards made with a fortune-telling theme. The cards can be be played as normal playing cards, but also come with instructions (in Japanese) to play a fortune-telling game. The cards themselves are sealed, unopened, and have the original unbroken tax stamp on the outside. The cards come in a milky white plastic case with a diamond-shaped lenticular image on the lid that changes from a marble statue to "Uranai" (the Japanese characters for fortune-telling). The cards are stamped over the tax stamp with "Nintendo Playing Card Co." which was Nintendo's official name from 1951 to 1964, so we can date this deck to that decade.
Each set comes with a GREAT cardboard sleeve which has Nintendo's name printed in different script fonts, in both English and Japanese.
Examples of early Nintendo-branded playing cards are very rare outside of Japan, as Nintendo themselves used different non-Nintendo trademarks (such as The Standard Playing Cards) to export their products to other countries.
This is a great collectible for those interested in Nintendo's "pre-Mario" history, from the time when they were not yet a worldwide known name.
